Abstract
Unquestionably, the consequence of a false diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) are usually more serious than failure to diagnose this disease. Fear of provoking an exacerbation by lumbar puncture is unjustified, and MS is not an adequate reason for the omission of myelography, an arteriogram or an air study of the cerebrospinal fluid (csf) - spaces if an indication for such diagnostic measures exists. However, every neurologist has seen cases in which technical procedures appear to have prepared the way for rather sudden episodes of worsening, sometimes with irreversible results.
