Abstract

The Sexual Orientation Method (SOM) was introduced in 1966 by FELDMAN and his associates as a questionnaire measure intended to assess the relative levels of homo- and heteroerotic orientation of patients. It is based on a combination of the semantic differential technique of OSGOOD (1957) and the personal questionnaire technique of SHAPIRO (1961). As FELDMAN et al. say: “We have followed the basic approach of the former, but have changed the method of presentation so as to gain the advantage of detecting departures from internal consistency afforded by the latter, as well as basing our scoring system on Shapiro’s.”

This research was carried out as part of an M.R.C.-supported project M.R.C. G970/340/C) under the general direction of Professor J.G. Gibson. Four of us (J.J.M.H., P.J.G., J.T.Q., H.McA.) constitute a research team. No seniority of authorship is implied by the order of names on this paper.
