Abstract

Previous studies resulted in controversial opinions about the origin and the early development of the lymphatic system in man. Some authors believed that the lymphatics developed from a few venous sprouts which soon acquired a specific lymphatic character and, as a result of centrifugal growth, contacted each other and extended into the surroundings. Others were of the opinion that the lymphatics arose from spaces in the mesenchyme which confluenced in a centripetal direction and secondarily opened into the veins. Still others suggested that these two modes of development were both involved.
