Mathematical Models of the Mechanics of the Inner Ear

  • Chapter
Auditory System

Part of the book series: Handbook of Sensory Physiology ((1534,volume 5 / 3))

Abstract

This chapter is a description of the mathematical models of the mechanical functioning of the inner ear that have been developed since Békésy’s observations first became widely known. Theories of hearing developed prior to that time are interesting from an historical point of view, but they lack the modern insights that Békésy provided. They will, therefore, not be discussed here. The interested reader is referred to the comprehensive review of the older theories written by Wever (1949).
