Hearing and Equilibrium in Renal Failure

Part of the book series: Handbook of Sensory Physiology ((1534,volume 5 / 3))

Abstract

There is widespread consensus in the nephrologic literature that patients with uremia often suffer from dizziness and vertigo, less frequently from deafness (Bright, 1836; Rayer, 1840; Rosenstein, 1894; Morf, 1897; Volhard, 1931; Schreiner, and Maher, 1961). In so far as these symptoms are due to a coincident otitis media with subsequent labyrinthitis, they will not be dealt with, here; neither will we refer to the uremic neuro-encephalopathy or diffuse vascular lesions, both of which are often considered as the primary sources of auditory symptoms in terminal renal failure (Grahe, 1924; Strümpell-Seyfarth, 1930; Volhard, 1931; Mathes-Curschmann, 1947; Heyman et al., 1951; Beaney, 1964; Brod, 1964; Sarre, 1967; Heintz, 1968).
