Abstract

Electrocochleography (ECoG) is the recording of stimulus-related potentials generated in the human cochlea, including the first-order neurons forming the auditory nerve. These potentials are the cochlear microphonics (CM), the summat-ing potentials (SP), and the compound action potential (AP). The history of electrocochleography is relatively long, because only a few years after the discovery of CM in animals (Wever and Bray, 1930) a round-window recording of CM in man was reported (Fromm et al., 1935), although the responses were so small that no cathode-ray display could be obtained. Improved recording and amplification techniques gave better CM recordings (Andreev et al., 1938; Perlmann and Case, 1941; Lempert et al., 1947, 1950). The term cochleogram was proposed by Lempert et al. (1947), who in 1950 suggested the placement of a needle electrode through the eardrum onto the promontory. Despite this suggestion, all of the early recordings were made during ear surgery. These studies represent the first era of electrocochleography.
