Zusammenfassung

Erst vor einigen Jahrzehnten hat man begonnen, die psychologischen Probleme des unheilbaren und des sterbenden Kranken zu studieren. Man bemerkte, daß Menschen mit prognostisch ungewissen, unheilbaren, tödlichen Krankheiten sich zu ihrem Leiden ganz unterschiedlich verhalten und auch im Ablauf der Erkrankung verschiedene Einstellungen zeigen. Man entdeckte typische Abwehrformen der Angst vor Sterben und Tod und psychogenetische Zusammenhänge mit der früheren Lebensgeschichte. Eisslers 1955 erschienene Monographie „Der Psychiater und der sterbende Patient“ ist die erste große Veröffentlichung zu diesem Thema, mit der das besonders in den USA zunehmende Interesse ihren Ausdruck fand. Dabei war von Anfang an deutlich, daß es nicht genügt, sich mit dem Kranken, mit seinem Erleben und Verhalten auseinanderzusetzen. Als ebenso wichtig erwiesen sich das Geschehen in der Familie, die Soziologie des modernen Krankenhauses und schlißlich die Fortschritte der Medizin, welche durch außergwöhnliche technische Maßnahmen ein jahrelanges Überleben von Menschen ermöglicht haben, doe noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten in kurzer Zeit starben. Heute setzt sich in Nordamerika die Auffassung mehr und mehr durch, daß die Psychologie und Psychopathologie in solchen medizinischen Extremsituationen und im Sterben besondere psychologische und psychotherapeutische Aufgaben stellem [125].
