Zusammenfassung

1921 wurde Insulin erstmalig in einer Reinheit dargestellt, die zur Behandlung von diabetischen Stoffwechselstörungen ausreichte. Gleichzeitig mit diesem Datum setzten von Physiologen und Biochemikern intensive Bemuhungen mit dem Ziel ein, den Wirkungsmechanismus des Insulins aufzuklären. Trotz einer mehr als fünfzigjährigen Beschäftigung mit dieser Fragestellung steht heute fest, daß das Verständnis der molekularen Grundlagen der Insulinwirkung noch in weiter Feme liegt. Die Insulinforschung hat jedoch eine bis heute nahezu unübersehbare Fülle von experimentellen Daten zur Wirkungsweise des Hormones an den verschiedensten Geweben erbracht und entscheidende Erkenntnisse zu dem Problem der Stoffwechselregulation in höheren Organismen beigetragen.
