Zusammenfassung
Der Diabetes mellitus wird gewöhnlich als chronische Stoffwechselstörung definiert, die durch eine verzögerte oder unvollständige Verwertung zugeführter Glukose im Organismus mit abnorm erhöhten Glukosespiegeln im Blut charakterisiert ist, aber auch mit Störungen des Fett- und des Proteinstoffwechsels einhergeht. Ihr liegt ein absoluter oder relativer Insulinmangel infolge ungenügender Bildung, Freisetzung oder Wirksamkeit von endogenem Insulin zugrunde.
