Summary
36 patients of various ages and both sexes with healthy lungs and no special cardiac findings were studied with refard to development of respiratory acidosis under Ēthrane inhalation anesthesia with spontaneous breathing. For this purpose the following values were determined before operation, 30 and 60 min after the start and 60 min after the end of anesthesia: pH, pCO2, timed vital capacity (AMV), and respiratory frequency (AF), (AMV and AF were not measured after the operation). Statistically confirmed alveolar hypoventilation with subsequent respiratory acidosis was demonstrated; it was reversible and no longer detectable one hour after the end of anesthesia. The results were compared with those in the literature.
