Abstract

The triangular and helical cochlear duct contains the organ of Corti. It is bordered upwards by Reissner’s membrane, downwards by the basilar membrane on which the organ of Corti rests and laterally by the Stria vascularis. On the lower side of the basilar membrane a layer of mesothelial cells of varying thickness forms the tympanic cover layer. Of the three walls the Stria vascularis forms a very richly vascularized, presumably secretory epithelium.
