Abstract

Thirty years after the classic work of Dragstedt and Owen (1943), vagotomy occupies a firm position in the treatment of peptic ulcer. Truncal section of the vagus nerves, initially used alone, had many disadvantages such as a high recurrence rate due to severe gastric stasis and other disturbing consequences such as dumping and diarrhea. In the following years as new gastro-physiological findings became available different types of vagotomy combined with drainage procedures or gastric resection were described. Most of them are in clinical use today.
