Abstract
The exocrine secretions of the stomach include acid, pepsin, mucin and intrinsic factor. Testing of acid secretion is carried out for diagnostic purposes in patients in whom alterations in acid secretion are suspected to underlie gastrointestinal diseases, and to determine the effect of surgical interventions in reducing acid secretion. Methods developed for research are not dealt with in this review.
