Acute and Long-term Effects of Vagotomy on Gastric Mucosal Blood Flow

  • Chapter
Vagotomy

Abstract

Advances in methodology have revived interest in the measurement of gastric blood flow, as being directly related to gastric secretion or the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer. For six years we have been studying the hemodynamics in the gastric mucosa under various conditions, using the aminopyrine clearance technique proposed by Shore, Jacobson and others [1, 2, 3] in animal experiments, and seeking to throw some light on the relationship between secretory activity and the mucosal blood flow of the stomach. In the present study, gastric blood flow was measured at the pre- and post-vagotomy stages (including acute experiments and long-term studies) in anesthetized dogs subjected to various kinds of vagotomy.
