Significance of a Feeding Test with Check of Serum-Gastrin in Man and Dog

  • Chapter

Abstract

The cephalic secretory phase is arrested by SPV, which simplifies the isolated examination of the gastric phase and its control impulses. Feeding is the physiological stimulus and the criterion is the response of postprandial gastrin. Evidence is obtained concerning

  1. 1.

    the response of basal plasma gastrin and its dependence on the degree of completeness of SPV (or other forms of vagotomy);

  2. 2.

    the response of food-stimulated gastrin through a change in the control factors pH and distention;

  3. 3.

    the response of plasma gastrin after SPV as a possible cause of recurrent ulcer (there is evidence of an extreme increase in gastrin after SPV in single cases);

  4. 4.

    the magnitude of the isolated v-a (vagal-antral) gastrin release (in experiments);

  5. 5.

    eventually the effect of a drainage operation on gastrin release and the secretion of the vagotomized parietal cell.

The determination of the serum-gastrin was made by R. Arnold (Medical Clinic, University of Göttingen, Dir.: Prof. Dr. W. Creutzfeldt).
