The problem of dealing with the aged person is not only one for the Anaesthetist, but for all sections of Medicine, and it is a fact that very often the Anaesthetist has to act as the patients’sphysician before, during and after the operation. It is estimated that of the total population of the united Kingdom, 12 % are of the age of 65 and over, and of the series of 10,000 cases submitted for operation at Altnagelvin Hospital, 14 % were on subjects over the age of 65.
