Abstract
The exact role of immunologic factors in the etiology of human breast cancer is not known; it is often speculated, however, that these factors may be important in both the development and progression of cancer in man. An impressive body of circumstantial evidence, mainly in the experimental animal and lately in man, suggests that immunity is important in host resistance to antigenic malignancy and that any breakdown of the normal immune mechanisms facilitates the development of malignant tumors. Many excellent reviews have appeared in the literature covering cancer immunology and references to original investigations may be found there [Alexander, 1954; Southam, 1960; Prehn, 1967; Klein, 1968; Stutman and Good, 1971; Prehn, 1971 (1); Miller, 1972]. Because of the ever-increasing importance attributed to immunity in the etiology of tumors, a brief and selective review of pertinent experimental observations will precede a discussion of the evidence in man.
