Summary

Although a lot of DDC-algorithms for process computers have been proposed during the past few years, there are nearly no comparative investigations on the efficiency of these control algorithms for practical applications. Therefore, this paper tries to compare critically seven of the most important DDC-algorithms for control of a heat exchanger under different aspects. With regard to the industrial application, the effectiveness and sensitivity of these control algorithms is investigated under various working conditions and disturbances of the controlled object. Starting with the classical PIDT1-control algorithm, this is compared with the algorithms of the HP- (half-proportional), cascaded-, compensation- and “deadbeat response”-control action. The results of these control algorithms are compared with the method using an optimal linear regulator with an observer for the state variables. Furthermore, an adaptive control algorithm is applied. Finally, the practical working control engineer will be referred to the efficiency and expense of these DDC-algorithms.
