Formation and Regulation of Messenger RNA in Animal Cells

  • Conference paper
Regulation of Transcription and Translation in Eukaryotes

Abstract

For many years the problem of messenger RNA (mRNA) formation in animal cells has resisted the efforts of investigators to comprehend this basic mechanism of cellular life. Although the discovery of messenger RNA in bacterial cells [1] touched off almost immediately the search for its analogue in animal cells, the basic pattern of its biogenesis in eukaryotic cells was only recently clarified. However, at a relatively early stage of this investigation, a correct interpretation of this fundamental mechanism of gene expression in higher organisms was possible. The basic observations concerning RNA synthesis in animal cells [2–8], cytogenetic data and theoretical considerations led us to propose at that time a pattern of mRNA synthesis which differed fundamentally from that observed in bacteria [5, 6, 9–12]. Nevertheless, much more precise knowledge had to be acquired to permit a comprehensive account of the life history of a specific messenger RNA from transcription to translation [13].
