Functional Characterization of Five Initiation Factors for Mammalian Protein Synthesis

  • Conference paper
Regulation of Transcription and Translation in Eukaryotes

Abstract

Although there has been rapid progress in the separation, purification and partial functional characterization of several protein factors involved in mammalian polypeptide chain initiation from rabbit reticulocytes [1–9], the mechanism of eukaryotic chain initiation is still not clear. In our earlier work [10] we used well-defined ribosomes (purified 60 S and 40 S subunits) whose structural and functional integrity was shown by their capacity to participate quantitatively and efficiently in the in vitro translation of rabbit globin mRNA.
