Abstract
The special case of the metabolism of the rat brain after application of 6-aminonicotinamide (6-AN) was described in the preceding chapter by Herken. The main facts are: 6-AN leads to the formation of 6-aminonicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (6-ANADP) which, by inhibiting 6-phosphogluconate deydrogenase results in a large accumulation, up to about 2 mM, of 6-phosphogluconate. This is sufficient to inhibit the glucose phosphate isomerase severely, and it may influence the glycolytic rate in the brain.
