Abstract
The individual steps involved in the synthesis and breakdown of phosphatidylcholine are shown in Fig. 1. Choline is phosphorylated to phosphorylcholine which is used in the formation of cytidine diphosphate choline (CDP-choline); the phosphorylcholine moiety is then transferred into a digliceride. Breakdown takes place via lysolecithin to yield glycerylphosphorylcholine, and in turn choline is split off from this compound.
