Abstract
The effects of ergot alkaloids on the central nervous system are well known. Bradycardia, vomiting, and vasomotor and pressoreceptor inhibition are responses controlled from the medulla oblongata. Hypothalamic and diencephalic effects of ergot alkaloids have been observed chiefly with lysergic acid derivatives of small molecular size. In 1968 investigations carried out with the hypothermic isolated perfused cat head showed that Hydergine had a stimulatory effect on disturbed cerebral activity [1, 2, 3, 4]. Similar effects of Hydergine on the central nervous system have been confirmed in clinical studies recently [5, 6].
