Abstract

Most of the electron micrographs in this article were taken at instrumental magnifications between 70,000 and 140,000 on a Hitachi HU-11B electron microscope. A pointed filament and a liquid nitrogen-cooled anticontamination device were generally used. Careful alignment, control of astigmatism, use of appropriately selected condenser and objective apertures, and operation of the microscope under conditions of reduced vibration are among the factors which contributed to the attainment of high instrumental performance.
