Temperature Acclimation and Adaptive Changes in the Nervous System

  • Chapter
Effects of Temperature on Ectothermic Organisms

Abstract

I wish to begin by quoting Sir Charles Sherrington who, in his book “The Integrative Action of the Nervous System”, says that “the nervous system is in a certain sense the highest expression of that which the French physiologists term the milieu interne” (Sherrington, 1906, p. 3–4), a reference to the concept of Claude Bernard. The nervous system, through its sensory input, is the primary organ of adaptation to the environment. In addition, pharmacological research has shown that the functional contacts between two nerve cells, the synapses, and the functional contacts between nerve cells and effectors, are in many cases the most sensitive and adaptive parts of the nervous system and of the whole animal.
