Acute Renal Failure

Urology in Childhood

Part of the book series: Handbuch der Urologie / Encyclopedia of Urology ((1020,volume 15 / 1))

Abstract

There are many differences between the clinical patterns of acute renal failure in infants and in older children (Barratt, 1971), and in this chapter emphasis will be placed upon the younger child. The important factors which determine the special features of renal failure in early life are the physiological characteristics of small body size (Barratt, 1973), maturation of renal function (Edelmann and Spitzer, 1969), growth-directed metabolism (McCance, 1959) and the particular susceptibility of the infant kidney to certain disorders.
