Abstract

This article reviews for the non-specialist the current state and limitations of infrared techniques for astronomical observations in the range 1 µm to 1 mm. A brief historical survey is followed by sections on the special problems of infrared measurements, detection systems, infrared photometers, spectrometers, and polarimeters, infrared telescopes, infrared observatory sites, and the role of airborne and space observations.
