Zusammenfassung

Sepsis ist eine allgemeine Infektion, bei der die Erreger von einem Herd aus kontinuierlich oder intermittierend in die Blutbahn gelangen und — häufig unter Bildung von Metastasen — schwere Krankheitserscheinungen hervorrufen. Der Sepsisherd kann mit der Eintrittspforte der Bakterien identisch sein, kann aber auch von einer Metastase gebildet werden. Sepsis ist heutzutage am häufigsten bei resistenzmindernden Grundkrankheiten, nach intensiver immunsuppressiver oder antibiotischer Behandlung sowie nach diagnostischen und therapeutischen Eingriffen. Vorübergehende Anwesenheit von Bakterien im Blut ohne Krankheitserscheinungen und ohne Metastasen wird als Bacteriämie bezeichnet (z. B. nach Zahnextraktion).
