Abstract
When red cells are washed in isoton ic saline and observed between glass slide and coverslip, a transformation in their shape takes place. They change from a biconcave disc into a sphere covered with “spicu les.” Th is form is called a crenated cell or an Echinocyte. The phenomenon is due to the high pH induced by the glass. The transformation is reversible: when the same cells are washed with normal fresh plasma they resume their former discoid shape.
