Functional Parameters of Ureteral Peristalsis

  • Chapter

Abstract

The interpretation of observations recorded during functional examinations requires parameters that facilitate a qualitative and quantitative determination of the functional state of an organ and, at the same time, interindividual comparisons. Thus, a large number of biotechnical studies have been performed with a view to analysing the relationships between the peristaltic contractions of the ureteral muscles on the one hand and the flow velocity and the endoluminal pattern of pressure distribution on the other (Shapiro et al., 1969, Simhan 1971, Fung 1971). The physiology of the ureter, however, is characterized by a number of parameters, some of which are connected with one another like dependent and independent variables of a mathematical equation.
