Abstract

The effect of soil water on quality and yield of various forage crops has been the subject of a considerable amount of research in the past. The optimum irrigation schedule for a given crop depends on many factors, including rooting habits of the plant, water-holding capacity of the soil, peak water use during the growing season, and climatic factors such as the presence or absence of rainfall. The maintenance of a favorable soil-moisture regime is particularly critical in arid and semiarid regions when most or all of the growing season coincides with the rainless period of the year.
