Abstract

The solid paricles of the soils are classified, according to their size, as sand (> 0.02 mm), silt (0.02 mm > silt > 0.002 mm), and clay (< 0.002 mm). The clay particles of the soils usually carry a net negative charge. This charge is neutralized by adsorbed cations than can be exchanged for a stoichiometrically equivalent amount of other ions occurring in the solution. The reaction whereby a cation in solution replaces an adsorbed cation is called cation exchange.
