Abstract

The 4 parathyroids each measure 3–6 mm by 2–4 mm by 0.5–2 mm and weigh 30–35 mg. They are located near the trachea and immediately posterior to the superior and inferior poles of the thyroid gland Their blood supply is mainly from the inferior thyroid arteries. The nerve supply is chiefly vasomotor and arises from the superior and recurrent laryngeal branches.
