Abstract
Testosterone is the principal androgen produced by the Leydig cells in the testes. About two-thirds of the testosterone in plasma is bound to proteins. Some testosterone is converted in the liver to 17-ketosteroids (17-KS) and excreted in the urine. Since about two-thirds of the urinary 17-KS are of adrenal origin and one-third are of testicular origin, urinary 17-KS excretion cannot be used as a specific index of Leydig-cell activity.
