Physical and Chemical Properties of Uranium

  • Chapter

Abstract

Uranium is the ninety-second element of the periodic system. The atomic ground state is designated 5L 60 in spectroscopic notation and has a 1s 2 2s 2 2p 6 3s 2 3p 6 3d 10 4s 2 4p 6 4d 10 4f 14 5s 2 5p 6 5d 10 5f 3 6s 2 6p 6 6d 7s 2 electronic configuration (Laun, 1966; Steinhaus et al., 1966). The valence electrons are those of the 5f 3 6d 7s 2 shells. Binding energies of electrons in the various shells are given in Table 2.1 (Siegbahn et al., 1967). The tabulated binding energies are given with zero binding energy at the Fermi level. The total binding energy is therefore larger by an amount equal to the work function. Recent measurements of the uranium work function and the methods of measurement are given in Table 2.2.
