Abstract
The spider Agelena labyrinthica oscillates about a straight line direction during its optically and kinesthetically oriented locomotion upon a horizontal web, on its return to its retreat (fig. 4a, b). If, during the experiment, the optic and kinesthetic reference directions diverge, the spider may then assume a resultant direction. The spider turns at the starting point through the smaller of the two possible angles towards the direction of motion (fig. 5, 6), i.e. the integration of the optic and kinesthetic components must have been performed prior to the start. During the turn towards the direction of motion, the spider already traverses approximately 4 cm of the web. The components of taxis and locomotion within the orientation thus are not separate processes.
