Abstract
The occurrence of calcium carbonate as two different minerals, calcite and aragonite, was one of the earliest and most discussed examples of polymorphism. The early publications concerning the problem have been reviewed by Gossner (1930) in Hintze’s Handbuch der Mineralogie. However, the early history of the problem has not by any means developed in a straightforward fashion and has lost much of its interest when seen in the light of the present state of knowledge.
