Abstract
Entry into the thoracic cavity, like the cranium, is time-consuming, fraught with difficulties and has a substantial traumatic effect upon the patient. Two main factors influence effective division of the sternum or resection of the rib: the close approximation of the pericardium, which requires protection, and the necessity of retaining vascular bone to ameliorate the healing process.
