Abstract

After the presentation and discussion of the isotopic composition of strontium in different igneous and sedimentary rocks in the preceding chapters, we now return to the problem of dating by the Rb-Sr method. We stated in Chapter II that one of the prerequisites for dating rocks or minerals is that their concentrations of rubidium and strontium and their 87Sr/86Sr ratios must have changed only as a result of decay of 87Rb to 87Sr. When this condition is not satisfied, the dates calculated from the equations derived in Chapter II do not indicate the age of a rock, but may instead date the end of the alteration process that disturbed its 87Rb-87Sr decay scheme.
