The Distribution of Catecholamines in Vertebrates

  • Chapter
Catecholamines

Abstract

Three catecholamines have been definitely identified as being present in many vertebrate tissues. These are (−)-adrenaline ((−)-2-[3,4-dihydroxyphenyl] methylethan-2-olamine), (−)-noradrenaline ((−)-2-[3,4-dihydroxyphenyl] ethan- 2-olamine) and dopamine (2-[3,4-dihydroxyphenyl] ethylamine). In addition there are several reports which demonstrate the presence of the precursor amino acid L-DOPA ((−)-2-[3,4-dihydroxyphenyl] alanine) but many of these are based on a minimum of experimental evidence and some are conflicting in their observations. N-methyl adrenaline (Axelrod, 1960) and N-methyldopamine (epinine) (Märki et al., 1962) have also been extracted from vertebrate tissues or body fluids. There may be other catecholamines present which have yet to be isolated.
