Abstract
Interest in the fine structure of catecholamine containing cells has centered mainly upon the identification of the cellular organelles which store the catecholamines. This is a natural prerequisite since, with rare exceptions, there is no way to ascertain that the cells being examined do actually contain catecholamines without a documented specific cytochemical method. As a result, most reviews of the subject have quite properly emphasized approaches to the identification of cytochemically reactive tissue catecholamines (see Bloom and Giarman, 1968; Hokfelt, 1968a, b; Tranzer et al., 1969; Bloom, 1970; Jaimetcheverry and Zieher, 1970), with considerably less emphasis given to a description of the fine structural characteristics of these cells (Grillo, 1966; Hokfelt, 1969). Therefore, the present chapter will not only attempt to cover critical analysis of the currently available cytochemical methods for catecholamines, but also to highlight current concepts of the fine structure as well.
