Central Actions of Catecholamines

Catecholamines

Abstract

The last twenty years have seen remarkable strides in understanding of the anatomy and function of the noradrenergic and dopaminergic components of the central nervous system. The discovery and mapping of noradrenaline in the brain (Vogt, 1954), apart from giving impetus to work in this field, also indicated what functions noradrenaline might serve by revealing its distribution. Dopamine is also present, mainly in the corpus striatum and median eminence. The distribution of amines was given meaning in terms of neuronal pathways by use of fluorescence microscopy (Dahlsteom and Fuxe, 1965; Fuxe, 1965; Hillakp et al., 1966). Nigro-striatal and tubero-infundibular dopamine neurone systems were described as well as ascending and descending noradrenergic pathways. A further sophistication was development of substances which interfered with either the breakdown or synthesis of catecholamines, so increasing or depleting neuronal stores. That there were sites in the brain selectively responsive to catecholamines became evident from iontophoretic micro-electrode studies.
