Das wesentliche Kriterium für die Therapie und die Prognose maligner Geschwulste ist die Frühdiagnose. Eine Aufschlüsselung der Rectum-carcinome nach dem TNM-System der UICC (Bockelmann et al., 1970) hat beispielweise für einen Tumor des Stadiums Tl N0 Mo eine 5-JahresÜberlebensrate von 53,1% ergeben, die aber, sind einmal regionäre oder Fernmetastasen vorhanden, unter 5% absinkt.
