Role of Taste in Specific Hungers

Taste

Part of the book series: Handbook of Sensory Physiology ((1730,volume 4 / 2))

Abstract

In a free natural environment there are few complete foodstuffs for any particular species. Animals are therefore faced with the task of identifying and ingesting a variety of foods which will constitute a nutritionally complete diet. In addition, they must be able to identify and discriminate those foods which may be safely ingested from among poisonous or inedible foods. The task of obtaining adequate foods may sometimes be further complicated by physiological imbalances or disorders which make it necessary to obtain greater than normal amounts of some nutrient in order to maintain the homeostatic balance and metabolic integrity of the internal environment.
