Zusammenfassung
Die kleinen DNS-Tumorviren können eine Zelle auf verschiedene Weise beeinflussen: Der Kontakt einer Zelle mit einem DNS-Tumorvirus kann entweder zu einer produktiven Infektion oder aber zur Transformation führen. In einer produktiv infizierten Zelle findet Virusvermehrung statt, eine neue Generation infektiöser Virusteilchen reift heran, und die Zelle wird lysiert. Im Gegensatz dazu läuft in einer transformierten Tumorzelle keine Virusvermehrung ab. Solche transformierten Zellen sind weiterhin teilungsfällig und bleiben frei von infektiösem Virus.
