Abstract

In the last few years there have been many reports on the metabolic stimulation of lymphocytes by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), an extract from Phaseolus vulgaris. PHA causes an increase of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis in lymphocytes, stimulates their transformation to lymphoblasts, and induces them to undergo mitosis [1, 2, 8, 9, 12, 14]. The transformation of lymphocytes may be regarded as an example of gene activation in mammalian cells [10, 15].
