Summary

A potential new biophysical tracer is described: 11C, which has a half-life of 20.5 min with 0.5 MeV gamma radiation and can be employed with existing equipment and drugs in common use.

Substances containing 12C are activated by means of gamma rays of a threshold energy of at least 19 MeV, produced by betatron or linear accelerator. There is difficulty in incorporating sufficient tracer into a non-toxic quantity of a physiological substance. The work was supported by animal experiments and chemical analyses.
