Radiation Doses to Patients from Radionuclide Investigations

A Survey Carried Out in New Zealand in 1967

Abstract

Data has been collected on all in vivo radionuclide tests and treatments carried out in New Zealand over a 3 month period in 1966. For each type of investigation an assessment has been made of the radiation doses received by organs of increased uptake and by the gonads. From the statistical data of the numbers and types of investigations and treatments and the calculated gonad doses, an annual genetic dose to the population of 0.062 mrad per person was determined, of which only 0.015 mrad arose from the use of radionuclides in diagnosis.
