Abstract
The previous chapters have shown the great value of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in bringing new and basic understanding to the configurations and conformations of polymer molecules, to polymerization chemistry, and to the structures of important classes of molecules both natural and synthetic. These powerful studies employ polymer solutions and depend on high resolution methods of NMR. In the real systems where polymers are used, however, these substances ordinarily occur as solids or as highly viscous liquids. It is therefore important to apply NMR to the study of polymers in these states of matter. Corresponding studies have long been made by other methods such as dielectric and dynamic mechanical experiments. In this chapter we briefly review the contribution of NMR to the understanding of solid polymers.
