Abstract

In the following monograph only those salts precipitated from seawater or from solutions of similar composition will be considered. As can be seen from Table 1 (from Sverdrup et al., 1949) if water itself is excluded there are actually only six main components in seawater, namely

the cations Na+, Mg++, Ca++, K+,

and

the anions Cl-, SO4 --.

These are also the components of the salt minerals which form the major part of salt deposits derived from oceanic water.
